Just as the first rays of dawn broke over the city, Phillippe slunk into his apartment and fell face down into his bed. He barely had the energy to kick off his shoes before sleep took him. However, just as he was dozing off he heard the phone ring. Fuzzily, Phillipe picked up the phone at his night-stand. “Hello?” he said. The hushed, but feminine, voice on the other end replied “Mr. Leger, you sound tired. Did you have a late night?” Confused, Phillippe replied “Who is this?” The voice didn’t answer, but continued “Ah, but you must be tired, with all those illicit activities. I am sure the police would love to hear about why you were in that burning office building.” Phillippe was used to blackmail, but he was not typically on this end of it, he scrambled for what to say “…I have no idea what you mean”. A short chuckle came from the other end of the phone before the voice continued “You can save your denials for the police. Unless, of course, you can think of a compelling reason why the police shouldn’t find out about this… If so, you should put five thousand dollars in a suitcase, and come to the Berlin Zoo in 4 hours…it’s your choice, Mr. Leger”
Meanwhile, the rest of the group head back from The Thirsty Mule and check on Piotr’s place to see if the The Law had cleared out. They meet up with William Derschowitz who was waiting there to meet up with Piotr. Not only were were the beat cops still there, sitting in their car, but the lights in Piotr Novak’s place were on and casting shadows of at least five figures as they searched it.
Piotr and Jiri made their way into Piotr’s apartment while William distracted the cops. William proved to be overzealous in his duties and got himself temporarily arrested. Piotr and Jiri were unable to sneak up on the goons in his apartment, but were able to overpower all but one of them. The remaining one fled into an alleyway where Alistair convinced him that he was setup and Alistair was his only hope.
They later met up with the man and discovered that he was russian military. They arranged for a meeting with his superior who was expecting to meet his soldier not the group. Posing as MGB (Russian State Security) agents they were able to determine that the goons in Piotr’s apartment were searching it on General Durov orders.
From there they staked out the paper where Renate Kraus works and questioned her about what her stake in the game was. It turns out she was working on a story about the recent happenings at The Morning Star News and had been looking for Ernest Traube. Piotr set up a meeting with Ernest and they agreed to meet up with Renate in the morning once she had tracked down a few more leads.
